In 2018, NCGC members Kris Johnson and Stephanie Radman founded Flowers on Wheels. Having volunteered together for many years delivering meals to clients of Meals on Wheels of New Canaan, they began cutting flowers from their own gardens to bring along with the meals. This small gesture—a single flower—brought joy and comfort to the clients.
At the time, Stephanie was serving on the Board of Meals on Wheels of New Canaan when she developed the idea for Flowers on Wheels. Today, members of the New Canaan Garden Club continue the tradition, cutting flowers from their gardens and delivering them to Meals on Wheels clients twice a month from April through October, when gardens are in bloom.
Over time, Flowers on Wheels has grown to include two divisions: the original Meals on Wheels program and a partnership with The Inn at Waveny. Since 2020, New Canaan Garden Club members have been delivering donated flowers from Trader Joe’s in Stamford to residents of The Inn once a week. These flowers are used in a popular activity where residents create beautiful floral arrangements.
In addition, a dedicated group of New Canaan Garden Club members cut flowers from their own gardens, create arrangements, and deliver them directly to residents at The Inn at Waveny.
What began as a simple act of kindness has become a heartfelt tradition. These flowers may seem like a small gesture, but they bring great meaning and joy to many individuals in our community.
