About Us – Old

THE NEW CANAAN GARDEN CLUB began in the Summer of 1909.  It wasn’t long before the membership grew and within two years exceeded 150 members.  Residents in the neighboring towns of Connecticut including Stamford, Ridgefield, Westport, Darien and Greenwich maintained membership in the New Canaan Garden Club as well as members from Pound Ridge, Bedford, Katonah and New York City.  Eventually, the Club became so large it was necessary for some of these villages to form garden clubs of their own.  The New Canaan Garden Club took an active role in helping these smaller towns to formulate the structure to begin their own Garden Clubs.     Continue Reading →

Floral Design

The Floral Design Committee welcomes all NCGC members who have an interest in learning, participating and supporting each other in the art of floral design. We encourage both committee and non-committee members to participate in judged monthly sweeps as well as demonstrations and workshops. Visiting area flower shows educates and inspires us. We also participate in GCA and Federated Flower shows.

Horticulture

The New Canaan Garden Club’s Horticulture Committee consists of approximately 20 members who participate in monthly meeting sweeps, area flower shows, garden chats, workshops, and an annual plant exchange.   The Horticulture Committee invites all club members to participate in these activities in order to share and promote horticultural knowledge, the love of gardening, and ultimately, to improve the quality of our environment.

Photography

The Photography Committee is open to all NCGC members who have an interest in learning about and sharing their knowledge of photography.  Both novice and experienced photographers are encouraged to learn and experiment with their cameras through our workshops and to feel comfortable entering NCGC sweeps and GCA shows.  Our workshops are designed so that the participants can immediately apply what they have learned in the workshop to the following month’s sweep.     Continue Reading →

Garden Tips

  • This winter storage method keeps clippers, shears and other tools clean and sharp.  Scoop clean sand into a new pail.  Mix 1/2 cup of oil into the sand. Sharpen and clean each tool with a file; sandpaper it, wipe with a clean rag and plunge into the sand for the winter.  The sand can be re-used for many years.
