Visit to New York Botanical Gardens

Shortly before the holidays, twenty intrepid NCGC members caravaned to the New York Botanical Gardens to see the famed annual Holiday Train Show and to be delighted by the whimsical interpretations of New York landmarks created out of botanical materials. Bark, acorns, twigs and berries were skillfully and artfully transformed into Grand Central Terminal, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and dozens more captivating structures. After the train show, members were treated to a guided tour of Bunny Mellon’s Botanical Art, masterworks from the Oak Spring Foundation, featuring eighty important works ranging from Warhol to Redoute.

Visiting Gardens Trip to Holland – April 2018

A Very Special NCGC Trip to Holland ~ April 2018   The NCGC Visiting Gardens Committee is delighted to offer this special 7 day trip to Holland April 16-22, 2018. It will be led by Marie-Elizabeth Offierski, who specializes in creating custom garden tours. See www.toursbymarie.com and Architectural Digest, Dec.10, 2016 which contains an article about a trip she led for her step-mother Page Dickey and Bunny Williams. Marie has led multiple European trips for Sasqua Garden Club, to their unanimous delight.   Marie says that the choice of this particular week should be very floriferous. Note that Easter next year falls on April 1, 2018. Having the opportunity to have access to so many private notable gardens makes this trip unique. It will be open to a maximum of 15 members. Please take the time to look through the enticing itinerary and get back to me ASAP if you would like to be a part of this fun week!   If you have any questions please let me know and I will contact Marie before our information meeting on Thursday, March 30 at 10:00 at my house. Wave Hill’s 2021 Gardeners’ Party celebrates Louis Bauer

Several NCGC members attended Wave Hill’s 2021 Gardeners’ Party on Thursday, September 30th to celebrate Louis Bauer. For nearly two decades, Louis has dedicated himself to Wave Hill, first arriving in 1994 to work under Marco Polo Stufano, and returning in 2014 as Director of Horticulture. He epitomizes the distinctive style of gardening Wave Hill is known for—intimate, adventurous and plants first! Under Louis’ inspired leadership, Wave Hill remains at the forefront of American horticulture; his impact will last long into the future.

Waveny Care Center Flowers

Each week in January, NCGC members create the flower arrangements for the dining room and public spaces at Waveny Care Center.  A longstanding initiative, this flower arranging program was conceived by an NCGC member and many other organizations in town send volunteers each week to brighten the building and bring cheer to everyone who lives, works and visits Waveny.

Waveny Flowers in January

Over the years, the New Canaan Garden Club has asked members to volunteer and give of their time and creative talents to arrange flowers for the main rooms at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan for chosen months.  This year the month of January was selected and each week, depending on how many volunteers signed up, they created flower arrangements to suit the setting of the room and make sure the flowers stay fresh-looking for the week they volunteer for.     Continue Reading →

Waveny Walled Garden

Members were hard at work last week dividing and transplanting at the Waveny Walled Garden. Thank you to everyone for their time and effort to make this civic project a town treasure!

Weed Wrangle at Irwin Park

On two consecutive Saturdays, September 19th and 26th, a group of energetic NCGC members cut down several patches of Japanese knotweed, opposite the goat pen in Irwin Park. Armed with clippers, horticultural vinegar and black coffee, they cut and bagged the branches, and then poured vinegar and coffee in the hollow stalks. Hopefully, this will weaken the roots of the invasive knotweed plants at the time when they are the weakest (producing seeds). This action is part of a 3-year project to find the safest way to eradicate invasives from Irwin Park and encourage more native pollinators to return.
