Last month’s Conservation Corner presented the meadows at Irwin Park and how they offer a unique habitat in our wooded suburban town. The meadows at Irwin are full of perennial and annual wildflowers, vines, shrubs and mature trees which are home to bees, butterflies, birds, reptiles and mammals. The display featured late summer and fall blooming plants and how they benefit wildlife.
There are a number of excellent books and field guides specific to the ecosystems and habitats found in New Canaan. Here is a list of those displayed at the January 2014 monthly meeting:
Susan Bergen’s conservation exhibit from January’s meeting titled “The Garden in Winter” will be on display at the New Canaan Library the week of February 15th. Special thanks to Susan for sharing her knowledge and appreciation of our snow-covered gardens — they may be here to stay!
A sustainable garden should be able to adapt and continue indefinitely without requiring external inputs. A sustainable garden must not leave its environment depleted, but restored and in balance. A sustainable garden should be easy on the gardener, requiring low maintenance and little demand on the budget.
The February sweeps were well subscribed and the results beautiful! Thank you to all that entered in the Horticulture and Flower Arranging classes. Go to the Activities tab across the top of this page, scroll down to Photo Gallery and click to see all the wonderful entries. We hope for even more participation at our April meeting. There will be Photography sweeps as well as Hort and Flower Arranging. We look forward to a big turnout!
On Sunday evening, September 20th, the Irwin Park Committee hosted a reception for Friends of Irwin Park. We wanted to thank the donors who contributed to the completion of the Flexi-Pave loop at Irwin Park.
